Managing Operational Risks - Are Risk Assessments really making a difference for Shipboard Operations?

Event Description

MANAGING OPERATIONAL RISKS - ARE RISK ASSESSMENTS REALLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR SHIPBOARD OPERATIONS?

In the wake of an accident, a number of issues are in play, and often it is revealed that the quality of risk assessments was insufficient or poorly carried out. Thus, it's questionable what we learn from evaluating risk assessments.

At this debate event, we will look into specific cases where prior risk evaluation was done and still an accident occurred. The question really is: Can all of these methodologies and risks be handled within one approach/system, and how does the system manage potential goal conflicts? To kick-start the debate, we have invited the 'Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board' (DMAIB) and a risk management expert.

During accident investigations, DMAIB has taken a closer look at the preconditions for carrying out operational risk assessment in the situations in which they are performed. Among others, they have looked into 'Management of Change' and the methods used.

Instead of looking at risk assessments in hindsight to evaluate whether people involved did right or wrong, Marine Accident Investigator Grete Horsbøl from DMAIB will explain how they focus on understanding how the support for examining risk assessments influences the way we understand risk, and thereby how risk is measured and controlled.

Furthermore, Andreas Hedskog from '4C Strategies', who is a noted risk management expert, involved in various ISO technical committees, will identify the limitations and necessary supplements to traditional risk assessments and risk management frameworks. You will learn the essentials of how problems in designing a risk management framework are mitigated and the importance of creating risk awareness in complex operations.
